Nord Pool, Europe’s leading power market, has announced its trading figures for 2020, with the year producing strong numbers for the company across its markets.
During 2020 a total of 995 TWh* of power was traded through Nord Pool (comprising buy and sell volume combined).
The Nordic and Baltic day-ahead market traded 717.9 TWh and the UK day-ahead market 177.5 TWh, while Nord Pool’s one year old central and western Europe (CWE) day-ahead market (covering Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and The Netherlands) achieved 73.6 TWh of power traded by year end. Total intraday trading for the year stood at 26 TWh.
Commenting on the strong trading volumes seen in 2020, Kari Ekelund Thørud, CEO of Nord Pool, said: “In a year that proved challenging not just in the energy sector, but globally, it has been reassuring to see robust numbers again being recorded at Nord Pool. To me, this speaks both of the strength of Nord Pool’s markets and the trust our many customers, regardless of their size or where they trade from, place in us to deliver simple, efficient and secure power trading – even in unpredictable times.
“2020 saw power market competition widening across Europe, making it all the more important that we at Nord Pool continue to deliver solid results like those we are announcing today. Our competitive and efficient power trading offering is reflected in the continued trust our Nordic and Baltic customers showed in our markets during 2020, as well as in the performance of our UK and CWE markets, and across-the-board in intraday trading.”
The average system price in the Nordics during 2020 was 10.95 EUR/MWh, significantly reduced from last year’s figure of 38.97 EUR/MWh.
* Nord Pool changed how it presents key market trading volumes from 1st January 2020. Trading volume quoted for Nord Pool’s markets now comprises all buy volume (total volume bought per hour by market participants) plus all sell volume (total volume sold per hour by market participants) within each bidding zone.
