Nord Pool and Elma Launch Intraday Trading in Iceland Power Market
Nord Pool and Elma mark an important milestone with the launch of intraday trading in the Icelandic power market.
Following the successful introduction of day‑ahead trading in March 2025, intraday trading enables participants to trade electricity closer to real time – improving flexibility, strengthening operational efficiency and supporting secure balancing of supply and demand.
“Launching intraday trading is a significant step in the evolution of the Icelandic power market,” says Tom Darell, CEO of Nord Pool. “It allows market participants to respond to updated forecasts and changing market conditions, while supporting the security of supply.”
Katrin Olga Johannesdottir, CEO of Elma, adds: “Intraday trading gives participants greater flexibility and stronger tools to manage their positions during the trading day, reinforcing transparency and contributing to a well‑functioning electricity market.”
With this launch, Iceland now has a complete short‑term power trading framework, aligned with established European market models and supporting the continued development of the Icelandic energy system.

Welcome KISTERS
We are pleased to welcome KISTERS Group as an independent software vendor (ISV) partner for Nord Pool.
KISTERS supports energy traders, utilities and service providers by automating the full auction lifecycle – from portfolio structuring and bid submission through to trade settlement – without manual intervention. Its BelVis+ PFM platform handles flexible portfolio structures across sales units, power plants and customer portfolios, with intelligent aggregation that adapts to different organisational setups.
A core strength of the solution is API-based, real-time connectivity to multiple European energy exchanges, enabling market participants to manage day-ahead and intraday positions at scale. The platform is designed to grow with increasing trading volumes, processing high data frequencies and large datasets without compromising performance.
We value collaboration with ISV partners such as KISTERS, which support market participants across Europe in moving towards more automated and efficient energy trading operations.
Nord Pool Academy welcomes Bhutan energy representatives
