During the first week of operation 1,914 MWh were traded within Nord Pool Spot’s German bidding area KONTEK and between KONTEK and the other Elbas areas, Finland, Sweden and Eastern Denmark. This volume increased to 2,812 MWh in the second week of operation and 3,950 MWh in week 41. In the whole Elbas area, which includes Finland, Sweden, Eastern Denmark and KONTEK Germany, 34 participants traded a total volume of 31,621 MWh of which 9,132 MWh were block trades during week 40. These numbers are the highest traded volumes during a week so far in 2006.
Since there has been available capacity for Elbas trading on the interconnectors between Finland, Sweden, Eastern Denmark and Germany, the liquidity in the Elbas market has been very good and Elbas participants in KONTEK have met counterparties from Finland, Sweden and Eastern Denmark.
“By introducing Elbas in our German bidding area KONTEK, we have proven the unique advantages of the system both with regards to congestion management and cross-border intra-day trading. As of the 25 September, our new participants in Germany immediately gained access to a well functioning Elbas market in the Nordic region via the Kontek link between Eastern Denmark and Germany. When introducing Elbas in the rest of Germany in 2007 the system is built for handling future cross border congestion, which we view as a crucial precondition for a well functioning future European intra-day trading system,” says CEO of Nord Pool Spot Jørn Limann.
